Hurricane Ike

The third costliest U.S. hurricane of all time, only trailing behind Hurricane Andrew of 1992 and Hurricane Katrina of 2005, Hurricane Ike was devastatingly brutal to thousands of people, adults and children alike. Grace, Sharon, and Eric decided to help those victims.

Hurricane Act Timeline:

September 13, 2008:

Hurricane Ike made landfall in Galveston, Texas.

bullet Grace, Sharon, and Eric live 50 miles north of Galveston and experienced their first Hurricane ever while staying in the house with their parents.

September to December, 2008:

After the Hurricane, Grace, Sharon, and Eric tried to help the hurricane victims

bullet

They volunteered at Points of Distribution to distribute ice and water

bullet They visited their neighborhood and Galveston, took pictures of the damages, and published newsletters to let their neighbors and friends know the situation in their neighborhood and in Galveston (Newsletter Issues 1 & 3).
bullet They organized other children to write stories about their hurricane experiences, and published newsletters with those stories (Newsletter Issues 2 & 4).
bullet Grace, Sharon, and Eric conducted a series of book drives, jacket/clothing drives, and fundraising activities to help students from Parker/Burnet elementary and Central Middle School in Galveston.
bullet Their friends Joshua and Daniel Yuan at Potomac, Maryland conducted fundraising activities to help raise funds.
bullet

Their cousin Huang Muyun at Jishou, Hunan, China conducted fundraising activities to help raise funds.

December, 2008 and January, 2009

Grace, Sharon, and Eric delivered 16 boxes of books and jackets/clothing to Parker/Burnet Elementary (Newsletter Issue 5).

bullet Grace, Sharon, and Eric sent funds and books to Central Middle School in Galveston (Newsletter Issue 5).

Future directions:

bullet

Grace, Sharon, and Eric are working with Galveston ISD (Independent School District) Education Foundation to develop more projects to help the victims.
